    Welcome to Good Practice in Action - ELT for Developing LP21 Competences

    In this course, we explore effective English Language Teaching for developing LP21 competences, moving from input (receptive skills) to output (productive skills). Through an integrated skills framework, you revise your current knowledge about current methodology and trends and with a focus on best practice in teaching English, you experience Good Practice in Action where input sessions (Phase 3) are seen in action. Throughout this course you are encouraged to reflect on your own teaching, and discover and explore areas you would like to develop in your own professional and continuing development as a Secondary School English Language Teacher.

    Learning Goals:

    • You review and deepen your current knowledge in current methods and approaches.
      
    • You can identify, reflect and expand your current teaching methods and approaches.
      
    • You understand the paradigm shift of current ELT teaching methods and approaches. 
      
    • You understand and can apply an integrated skills framework. 
      
    • You can reflect and plan future lessons that take into account the aspects encountered.

    Course Format - the learning unit is structured as follows:
    

    1. Phase One: Introduction and overview of the course.
       
    2. Phase Two: Setting the learning context. 
       
    3. Phase Three: Development of current teaching methodology and approaches.
       
    4. Phase Four: Good Practice in Action.  
       
    5. Phase Five: Transferring Good Practice in Action into your own teaching.
       
    6. Phase Six: Conclusion - final reflection.

    How to navigate the course:
    

    • Take time to explore each section by reading the introductory text related to it.
    • Save any documents into your own folder for easy access. 
    • Work through the modules as they appear as each module follows on and develops from previous phases. 
    • Complete the tasks that are set in each module by following the instructions.
    • While not obligatory, you may wish to add any comments and reflections in the discussion forums. 

    Workload:

    For the workload of this course, you'll require to invest about 2.5 hours. Of course, you may choose to take more time to digest the content. Choose your own pace.

    Bibliography:

    You can use the Reflective Teaching/Study Journal to record any thoughts that arise during the course, or choose your own method. Whichever you choose, the journal is a valuable too and  is also linked to Phase 3 where you'll find questions in some of the input sessions.

    Welcome to Phase 4, where, applying the areas explored in Phase 3,  you experience Good Practice in Action, by observing how core principals explored in Phase 3 have been practically implemented.

    Materials required:

    • The Self-Evaluation of Teaching Practices document. 
    • The Lesson Plan, that accompanies the practical applications.
      
    • The worksheet document with all the activities used during the lessons.
      

    Study Instructions:

    1. Before experiencing Good Practice in Action, watch the teacher's  introductory video.
    2. Read through the rough plan, so you know how the lessons have been structured to support you as you watch each lesson. Note the shaded lessons are those that are demonstrated in the videos.
    3. At the end of phase 4, you may want to share your insights and reflections about what you saw focusing on the following: What was your main takeaway from watching these lessons, and what aspects of your teaching would you like to explore further moving on?

  • Aktivität It's time to apply your newly acquired knowledge a... auswählen

    It's time to apply your newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice by creating a lesson or an activity that will propel you to try out and explore new ideas in your own teaching context. You don't have to plan a complete lesson, but rather choose an activity to try out.  For example, you have discovered your while-listening activities are always the same and are not very effective, so you want to create a more effective while-listening sequence. 

    The length and duration of the implementation is up to you - it can be as little as 10 minutes or a whole 45 minute lesson.  

    Materials required:

    • The Self-Evaluation of Teaching Practices
    • The rough Lesson Plan Template.
    • A Coursebook you're using with your class.

    Study Instructions: First, there are two ways you can choose to implement this phase. 

    • You can use the lesson plan template to plan your lesson or activity. 
      
    • Plan a lesson as you would usually plan your lessons. 

    1. Go through the Self-Evaluation of Teaching Practices and look at areas that you found yourself wanting to explore further or try out new e.g. developing a listening lesson or while-listening activity.
       
    2. Now plan your lesson and try it out with your learners!
       
    3. In the discussion forum, once your lesson has been implemented you may want to share the experience!
